Eilonwy

Journal

Birth:

Eilonwy was born at 2:19 PM, Wednesday, June 7th. Eilonwy weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth, which makes her doubly lucky. She was twenty inches long.

Experiences:

  • Her first bath was on the evening of June 7. She didn't like it. Now, though, she loves bathtime.
  • The first rock and roll record Eilonwy listened to was Led Zeppelin III. It really got her attention.
  • Her first Pink Floyd record was Wish You Were Here.
  • The first time she was out of doors, and her first car trip, were June 10. She slept through those, so I don't know whether they really count as experiences.
  • Her first Bob Dylan record (playing right now): Highway 61 Revisited. But she's asleep, so only her subconscious wonders how it feels to be out on your own, with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.
  • Her first yoga class was on 7/30. It took her a couple of months to really get into it, but now she seems to really enjoy most of the class.
  • Her first "solid food" was rice cereal on 10/22. It confused her.
  • Her first trip to the movies was Tuesday 11/28. More details here.

Our "home shower" was August 5th, and what a great time it was! A zillion thanks to Sherry and Todd for throwing an awesome party! Go see the pictures - they're cool.

She's a longhorn already:

Thanks, Rachel!

Sarah flew to Colorado over the 4/1-4/4 weekend to see her sister Rachel's senior recital at CSU. Rachel devoted a section of the recital to Eilonwy and performed three beautiful lullabies. We discovered that Eilonwy really likes piano/voice music... she danced like crazy. Thanks, Rachel! You don't know how much it meant to us!

About the name

Her name is Eilonwy Kenna (pronounced EYE-lunn-wee KEN-ah). As some of you may remember, "Eilonwy" was the girl in the The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. "Kenna" means "to know" in old Norse. The American name Kenna is a female form of Kenneth (Gaelic for "fair one" and "fire-sprung"), which we also like, but our original inspiration was the old Norse.

Yes, we know it's unusual, and we know she'll have to tell people how to say it/spell it. But then, we have to correct people on the spellings of "Sarah" and "Bryan" on a daily basis, too. She certainly won't have the problem that the rest of us have -- "I'm looking for Bob/Jane/Dan/Joe/Sarah"..."Which one?"

Other info & pictures

Monday's child is fair of face,

Tuesday's child is full of grace,

Wednesday's child is full of woe,

Thursday's child has far to go.

Friday's child is loving and giving,

Saturday's child works hard for a living,

But the child born on the Sabbath Day,

Is fair and wise and good and gay.

--by Mother Goose

Sarah's a Wednesday's child, too.

Zodiac sign: Gemini; Somewhat interestingly, the three signs associated with Air in Western astrology are Gemini, Libra (Sarah's sign), and Aquarius (Bryan's sign). Just a fun little coincidence. Air signs are associated with thought, perspective, and communication... not that we're into astrology or anything, but it's kind of an interesting tidbit.

Chinese zodiac sign: dog

June Birthstone: Pearl, Moonstone, or Alexandrite

20th week sonogram

More pictures this time because there's more to see!

12th week sonogram

During this sonogram, we had a lot of fun because the baby was moving a lot, sucking her thumb, and generally being cute.

7th week sonogram

This sonogram is why we ("we" is Sarah — I had nothing to do with this foolishness. —Bryan) called the baby "gummi bear" for several weeks. She just looked like a gummi bear with a little flashing light inside!
